On July 9, 2004, The International Court
in Haag stated in its verdict that: The Wall is illegal. Shortly after, the UN
General Assembly confirmed the Haag verdict with 150 votes for (among others the
EU-countries) and only 6 votes against (hereunder Israel and USA). Thus, the
attitude of the international society is clear, both from a juridical and
political point of view.
Already before the verdict was given by the International Court in the Haag,
Israel had manifested that is intended to ignore any verdict. This is juridically possible, since the verdict is not juridically binding. Only the Security Council has the competence to take binding decisions, but there is no doubt that the USA will prevent any binding decision as for the wall.
Israel mut be put under pressure – We claim sanctions
The Haag verdict confirms that more than ever there is a need for pressure on the Israeli regime through perceptible sanctions. On many occasions, the Danish and the EU politicians have comdemned the Israeli assaults and terrorist acts in the occupied territories, but always without taking action. On the contrary, the EU has agreed with Israel on a Free Trade agreement, the socalled ‘association agreement’, which favorizes Israel with specially favorable trade conditions.
Europe has the power to press Israel since it is the biggest trade partner of Israel with 39% of the export and 48% of the import (1999-figures). It is only a question of will. It’s high time with sanctions against Israel. Because it is the most efficient way to press the Israeli regime.
- Denmark shall claim sanctions against Israel in the UN Security Council
- Denmark shall also work for this aim in EU. A first step is to cancel the free trade agreement with Israel
- Denmark shall be in front with sanctions – as was the case against South Africa.
If nobody breaks the passivity, Sharon will only continue. The result will not be peace. You don’t obtain peace by blocking up a people behind a wall. This will, on the contrary, mean continued war, terror and oppression. If this happens, the wall will stand as a monument of infamy over Danish and European passivity. This must not happen.
Therefore we claim action – NOW!
